Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina, Appalachian State University has built a national reputation for providing outstanding academics. Contributors to Knowledge
More than $15 million in research grants and contracts was awarded to the university in 2007-08. Appalachian encourages faculty/student collaboration on research and creative endeavors, so many of these projects generate special opportunities for undergraduates.
Supported by Alumni and Friends
Contributions to the Appalachian State University Foundation Inc. exceeded $24.7 million in the 2007-08 fiscal year, a 95 percent increase from 2006-07. The Yosef Club for scholarships for student-athletes received $1.28 million in private giving in 2006-07, a 92 percent increase from 2004-05.
Volunteers in the Community
The Appalachian and the Community Together (ACT office at Appalachian provided an estimated $1.85 million of volunteer service to the community during the 2007-08 school year based on the national standard for volunteer time.
Engaged Audiences
The University Forum Lecture Series brings nationally prominent speakers to campus. Their views enliven campus dialogue on a variety of issues. In 2008-09, the series will focus on the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth with a series of lectures and events focusing on Darwin’s ideas and their impacts on society, and his theory of evolution.
Athletic Champions
Appalachian offers 20 intercollegiate varsity sports for men and women. The Mountaineers have earned both the Southern Conference’s Commissioner’s Cup for overall excellence in men’s athletics 29 times since the award was established in 1979 and the Germann Cup, recognizing the top women’s program in the conference, six of the 18 years the award has been presented. In football, the Mountaineers have won three consecutive NCAA Division I FCS national championship titles.
An Environmental Friendly Campus
Appalachian is included in the National Wildlife Federation Report Card of environmental friendly campuses. The report is the nation's largest study to date created to gauge trends and new developments in campus sustainability.
